This Nancy Drew game has an Ancient Mayan theme. The game is a new one, which means none of the glitches of the old ones. There are two different detective levels, and as usual, the game takes a lot of logic to solve. Especially frustrating is the final scene in the game, which takes quite a bit to figure out! This is a challenge, and I'm an adult. I still can't figure out how girls age 12 can play these, but my eleven year old does and she loves them as much as I do. The historical references are accurate as usual, and the game itself is fun to play. It is definitely more challenging than a few others, including Haunted Mansion and Shadow Ranch.
I was a devoted ND fan as a child, and have been enjoying the PC games immensely as a so-called "mature" adult. Scarlet Hand, while not the MOST challenging of the ND games I've played, takes a satisfyingly long time to complete. It's easily the most educational of the ones I've played, requiring that you learn a multitude of facts about Mayan culture. The graphics are gorgeous as usual, and rather spooky. There's also quite a bit of humor and wit injected throughout, like Joanna's frequent parting exclamation, "Semper ubi sub ubi." (Look it up on the web and have yourself a giggle.) Sonny Joon's journal is comical, as is Sinclair's perpetual greeting, "Want a cookie?". The quality of the character acting is on a par with the other games, and exceptional in the case of Henrik. It seems that all the final scenes in these games require a switch from puzzle mode into arcade mode, involving deft mouse moves in a limited time frame. This is fine for most of the kiddies, but a little more difficult for the older set (like me) with slower reflexes. If I hadn't resorted to external hints on the web to extract the mouse sequence, Nancy would still be dead. I highly recommended this game to one and all. Semper ubi sub ubi!Read full review
I'm not big on computer games... this is currently the only one I own/have loaded on my computer, but I love it (though I haven't 'solved the case' just yet)! It's the second one I've bought from the Nancy Drew game line... the first was Message in a Haunted Mansion several years back (which I have parted ways with since... it's not really a game you can play repeatedly, as you are kind of obligated to remember who the villian is). I was obsessed with Nancy Drew books growing up, and it's great to be able to experience them on an interactive level. Overall the game is fun and it definitely makes you think.
Actually, it was my daughter that found this game. She showed it to me, I got an account with E-bay and then I went to our Wal-Mart to find the game there and read all the requirements for use on the computer. I did'nt find the game at Wal-Mart but, it was on E-bay! My daughter was so excited. She loves the Nancy Drew PC games and books and was thrilled to find one she had'nt played or read. We got it cheaper than if we had bought it at the store. She started playing it right away and had a blast with it. This was my first purchase ever on E-bay. It was very intersesting and I will definately do it again. Thanks very much!
Another adventure shared with Nancy Drew and the writers of this game. I love the graphics, the puzzles, the places you can move to and the learning that is involved without really realizing that you are learning. Make sure you find both computers at the top of the temple. I kept going to just the one and could not figure out how to move on because I couldn't find the one game. Enjoy!
